SOMERSET — A Minnesota teenager has died and four others have been seriously injured after being stabbed while descending a river in western Wisconsin, authorities said.

St. Croix County Sheriff Scott Knudson, the victims and the suspect, a 52-year-old man from Prior Lake, Minn., were all on the Apple River when the attack happened on Saturday afternoon . Knudson said investigators are working to determine what led to the stabbings and whether the victims and suspect knew each other. They were tubing with two different groups which included about 20 people.

Water reclamation authorities are combing the Apple River with metal detectors after five people were stabbed while descending the river in Somerset on Saturday.

“We don’t yet know who was connected to whom, who knew each other or what precipitated it,” Knudson said.

The knife attack happened on a hard-to-reach section of the river near the town of Somerset, about 35 miles east of Minneapolis. The suspect was arrested about an hour and a half later while descending the river downstream.
