2022 midterm primary results in Arizona, Missouri, Kansas, Michigan and Washington

Voters were elected Tuesday in five states in some of the states that were battlegrounds in 2020 – and will be again in 2024. Kansas voters voted to preserve abortion access for women on Tuesday night , as abortion faced its first test at the polls since the Supreme Court struck down Roe v. Wade.

With the influence of former President Donald Trump looming in some of Tuesday’s primaries, a CBS News poll released Tuesday showed that for Republicans, an endorsement from Trump is a plus for this candidate, and even more so among Republicans who say they “always” vote in Republican primaries, most of whom identify as MAGA Republicans.

In Arizona, former President Donald Trump rallied his allies in the Senate, governor and state secretary of races. Arizona was one of the main battleground states that went for President Joe Biden in 2020. After the election, some Republicans in the state tried to overturn the results, with a plan to send a slate fake surrogate voters who backed Trump in Congress for Electoral College Certification, rather than voters won over by President Biden.

In the Republican primary to face Democratic Sen. Mark Kelly in November, Trump backed Blake Masters, who has a comfortable lead according to two polls ahead of the primary.

For the governor, former TV news anchor Kari Lake and attorney Karrin Taylor Robson are in a close race for the GOP nomination that repeats a dynamic between Trump and former Vice President Mike Pence. Trump backed Lake, while Pence, along with Republican limited-term incumbent Governor Doug Ducey, backed Taylor Robson. Last month, Trump and Pence held dueling rallies for Lake and Robson on the same day.

Trump also backed a challenger for state House speaker rusty arborswho testified in June at a House Committee Public Hearing on January 6. Bowers is time-limited in the position, but is running for the state senate. A few days before the primary, the The Arizona GOP voted to officially censor him for his testimony, a culmination of the frustrations of many far-right members over Bowers’ past refusal to back Trump-backed attempts to void the 2020 election.

This year, Bowers helped block a bill, introduced by secretary of state candidate and current state representative Shawnna Bolick, to empower the legislature to choose its own voters, regardless of the vote. People. For his actions, the former president lashed out, calling the president a “cowardly RINO” and backed his opponent, former state senator David Farnsworth.

CBS News projects Attorney General Eric Schmitt, who led the crowded field, to win the Republican nomination for the open seat in the Missouri Senate. Eric Greitens, the former governor who resigned in 2018 and faced domestic violence allegations, led early in the race, but an $11 million publicity blitz by two anti-Greitens groups rattled him.

On the eve of the primary, Trump sounded a sort of split endorsement in the race, throwing his support behind “ERIC.” Eric Schmitt and Eric Greitens were quick to claim that they had won his support.

In Missouri’s 1st congressional district, CBS News projects incumbent Cori Bush, who unseated a longtime incumbent in 2020, will win her primary.

Meanwhile, three of the 10 House Republicans who voted to impeach Trump face primary challengers backed by Trump. Trump posted on Truth Social on Tuesday to urge Republican voters to “throw out the impeachment mud.”

In Michigan, Rep. Peter Meijer, a freshman Republican in a swing district centered around Grand Rapids, Michigan, is in a tough race against John Gibbs, a former housing and urban development official from the Trump.

In the race to face Governor Gretchen Whitmer, CBS News projects that Tudor Dixon will win the Republican nomination. Dixon, backed by Trump, had been seen by Republican strategists as the strongest candidate to take on Whitmer. Among the Republicans defeated by Dixon was Ryan Kelley, who was arrested in June for his participation in the January 6 attack on the United States Capitol.

“We now have the opportunity to truly hold Gretchen Whitmer accountable for the pain she has inflicted on all of us over the past three years,” Dixon said on her election night in Grand Rapids, Michigan, referring to the closures. schools imposed during the COVID-19 pandemic.

And in Washington, the top two voters will qualify for the general election, regardless of party affiliation. Republican Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler in the 3rd District and Dan Newhouse in the 4th District are both at risk of being ousted because of Trump-backed challengers.

Kansas voted to preserve access to abortion, voting ‘no’ on the possibility of changing the state’s constitution, marking the first time a state has voted on abortion, since the Supreme Court ruled invalidated Roe v. Wade.

Kansas Democratic Party Chairwoman Vicki Hiatt celebrated the victory for abortion access, saying in a statement, “This result confirms what we know to be true: Kansans want common-sense leadership that will protect their right to keep politicians out of their health care decisions”.

In 2019, the Kansas State Supreme Court ruled that the right to abortion is protected in the state constitution’s bill of rights. Voters decided whether or not to allow the constitution to be amended to ban the right to abortion.
