Campers witness the aftermath of the Apple River knife attack

River’s Edge Apple River Campground halted tubing operations on Sunday, following a stabbing that left one teenager dead and four injured over the weekend.

The company announced on its Facebook page that it will resume operations on Monday, August 1.

People at the campground told FIVE EYEWITNESS NEWS it was a fun, family weekend turned tragic.

“We’ve been coming here for about 15 years, just as a family reunion with my mom,” said camper Monica Anderson. Anderson calls tubing on the Apple River in Somerset, Wisconsin a family favorite. “We hang out and have family time and go down the river, have a drink,” she said.

But the hit was cut short on Saturday.

Anderson and his family were floating when they saw people gathered on the shore performing CPR.

Shortly after, they were pulled out of the water.

“We see CPR going on in two groups and it was bystanders,” she said. “The police then arrived and they had to wade through the water because it had broken down and they couldn’t drive there.”

The 911 call came in around 3:45 p.m. Saturday, reporting that several people had been stabbed on the Apple River, north of the Sunrise Bridge, while tubing.

The St. Croix County Sheriff’s Office arrived on the scene and found five people stabbed in the chest and torso.

According to the report, deputies, first responders and citizens provided medical attention to the injured. All five victims were transported to local hospitals.

One of the victims, a 17-year-old boy from Stillwater, later died. The other four have serious injuries but are stable, according to the sheriff’s office.

With the help of witnesses, authorities tracked down the 52-year-old suspect on the river at the tubers’ exit point.

“The sheriff came running and he said, ‘you have to get out, people are hurt,'” said Melanie Lu, a camper.

Lu was tubing on the river with his family when the stabbing happened.

She said it was the first time they had spent the weekend in Apple River and it might be the last. “It doesn’t feel like it’s safe and it kinda makes you think we’d want to come back?” said Lu.
