Chaka Khan expressed his disappointment at looking like a chipmunk in Kanye West’s “Through the Wire.”

The 2003 debut single set the rapper and producer on the path to stardom. But not everyone is happy with the track. Chaka Khan appeared on Have a nice day DC on August 1 to promote her new single, “Woman Like Me”. Host Marissa Mitchell asked if she had spoken to Kanye since “Through the Wire” came out in 2003.

“I’m not looking to hear from Kanye either,” the singer told the outlet. “No, I haven’t heard of him and I’m not looking to hear from him. That’s what he did. That’s what he did with his music. I was upset that I sounded like a chipmunk, because he didn’t say that when he asked if he could sample my song. He didn’t mention that he was going to speed it up to three times its normal speed.

Chaka Khan says that if she had been told that the sampling needed to be expedited, she would not have approved it. She also revealed that the experience taught her to ask herself exactly how her music should be sampled now, rather than guessing. “But since I didn’t think about it, believe me, I’m thinking about it now. I ask, ‘How are we going to do this?’ “, continued the man of 69 years.

Khan shared his dislike of the song in a 2019 interview on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen. She says the rapper asked her about sampling “Through the Fire” shortly after he was released from the hospital after a car accident nearly took his life. She says the rapper called the song instrumental in his healing process, so she felt it wouldn’t be fair to deny the sample’s use. Once she heard the finished product, however, she was flustered.

“It was a little insulting,” Khan told the sample. “Not insulting. I thought that was stupid. If I had known he was going to do that, I would have said “No”. Khan admits she never told Kanye she didn’t like the song, but believes her silence towards the producer/rapper says all that needs to be said between them.
