Close encounter of asteroid 2022 OE2 coming August 4

An asteroid larger than two football fields will pass Earth in the early hours of Thursday (August 4). The asteroid is expected to pass at 12:23 a.m. (ET).

NASA astronomers have discovered the asteroid, known as 2022 OE2, just a few days ago on July 26. The fleshy space rock is estimated to be between 557 and 1,246 feet (170 to 380 meters) wide, about twice as wide as an American football field is long. Astronomers have also confirmed that 2022 OE2 is an Apollo-class asteroid, meaning it orbits the sun and crosses paths with Earththe orbit, Previously reported Live Science. (Astronomers know about 15,000 such asteroids.)
