Republican Florida Governor Ron DeSantis suspended liberal prosecutor Andrew Warren on Thursday.

DeSantis made the announcement during a press conference broadcast Thursday on social media. DeSantis argued that Warren repeatedly refused to enforce laws passed by the legislature cracking down on child sex reassignment surgeries and abortion restrictions.

“We are suspending Soros-backed 13th Circuit District Attorney Andrew Warren for neglect of duty because he pledges to violate state law,” DeSantis’ office said in a statement. The 13th Circuit falls on Hillsborough County in Florida.

“Florida’s constitution gave veto power to the governor, not to state attorneys,” DeSantis said. “We are not going to allow this pathogen to ignore the law to take hold in the State of Florida.”

Officials said Warren has repeatedly tried to set himself up as the arbiter of which laws will and will not be enforced.

DeSantis’ office had teased Thursday’s decision on Wednesday, saying the announcement would not be political or related to endorsements.

“It’s not about abortion or anything else, it’s about being accountable to our law and order system to prosecute crimes. There was a model that developed in Hillsborough County where a person picks and chooses the laws they wish to enforce,” his office said.
