Kelis calls out Beyoncé over ‘Renaissance’ album sample

While most artists would be flattered to be sampled by Beyoncé, Kelis isn’t one of them.

‘Bossy’ Singer Isn’t Happy After Finding Out Queen Bey Sampled Her Song On Her New Album Renaissance. Bey’s “Energy” is taken from “Get Along with You” from Kelis’ 1999 debut album Kaleidoscopeboth produced by The Neptunes.

But Kelis claims the sample was used without his knowledge. In a comment left on her “bountyandfull” Instagram account, Kelis apparently called out Bey as well as Pharrell and Chad for disrespecting her.

“My mind is blown too because the level of disrespect and utter ignorance from all 3 parties involved is staggering,” she wrote. “I heard about it the same way everyone else does.”

Kelis’ name does not appear on the “Energy” writing and production credits, but Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo are listed.

“Nothing is ever what it seems, some people in this business have no soul or integrity and they have fooled everyone,” she added.

Kelis also responded to other comments regarding the sample. “This is a collab the world really needs,” one person wrote, to which they replied, “This isn’t collab, this is stealing.”

Another person added, “I always felt like Beyoncé really looked up to Kelis,” prompting Kelis to reply, “Admiring isn’t the word.”

Unsurprisingly, his comments didn’t sit well with the BeyHive, who launched the attack and flooded Kelis’ Instagram with bee emojis.

“You don’t own your masters and crazy Beyoncé is sampling you in the right way. Pharrell owns and wrote this song! Bake your beans and keep the Queen name out of your mouth!” one person commented on The Shade Room, while another added, “She doesn’t even own the rights to the song. Misplaced anger.

Kelis has been candid about his fallout with The Neptunes. In January 2020, she accused Pharrell and Chad of stealing profits and releasing her first two albums, Kaleidoscope and wandering country.

“I was told we were going to split the whole thing on 33/33/33, which we didn’t,” she said. The Guardiansaying she was “deceived and blatantly lied to” by “The Neptunes and their management and their lawyers and all that”.
