New Mexico SUV drives through parade, injures seven

Several people were injured after a vehicle drove through a ceremonial parade in Gallup, New Mexico on Thursday, according to state police.

Pictures on social networks captured a maroon SUV driving through the annual Intertribal Indian Ceremonial Parade, one of New Mexico’s oldest events.

Two Gallup Police Department officers were among the injured and received treatment for their injuries.

According to KOAT7, the driver traveled the parade route in the wrong direction. The outlet reports that two other people were inside the SUV.

The driver of the SUV was taken into custody. Officers arrested the two passengers as parade participants shouted angrily and confronted the trio.

The names of the suspects have not yet been released.

The Gallup Intertribal Ceremony is a 10-day celebration comprised of in-person and virtual events. The city celebrated its 100th anniversary of the annual event this year as the parade culminated with the first night’s festivities.
