Sarah Godlewski withdraws from Democratic US Senate primary

State Treasurer Sarah Godlewski dropped out of the Democratic U.S. Senate primary on Friday, clearing the field of leading contenders for the party’s presumptive nominee, Lt. Governor Mandela Barnes.

Barnes will face Republican U.S. Senator Ron Johnson in November. If elected, Barnes would be the state’s first black senator.

Godlewski was the third high-profile candidate to step down in the past five days, following the departures of Milwaukee Bucks executive Alex Lasry and Outagamie County executive Tom Nelson. The primary is August 9.

In a statement, Godlewski announced that she had suspended her campaign and supported Barnes. A press conference with Godlewski and Barnes is scheduled for later Friday.

Godlewski had informed Barnes of his decision in a phone call Thursday evening.
