“That Was Crazy” – NBC Boston

Talk about a crazy encounter. A humpback whale was caught on camera breaking through the water and landing on a boat off Plymouth, Massachusetts on Sunday.

Plymouth Harbor Master Chad Hunter told NBC10 Boston the incident happened around 10 a.m. off White Horse Beach. The 19ft vessel suffered minor damage to her bow but was still surprisingly seaworthy. The boat was able to return to the boat ramp under its own power, and the boat operator thankfully reported that there were no injuries.

“The boat was in the right place at the wrong time. It could have been a lot worse for everyone involved,” Hunter said. “Kids like to lean over the side of the boat to watch the fish, so it’s very lucky that no one was hurt here. An incident like this is quite rare but very dangerous for boaters.

Those familiar with the area, some having fished there for decades, told NBC10 Boston they had never seen anything like it before.

“All of a sudden, the cylinder head full, ten feet out of the water, slams on his guy’s boat, like his bow is going down, basically, in the water, the engine stops, everything goes was coming off, the whale is rolling sideways just fine, but his boat was messed up,” one man said. “It was crazy, the guy was just in the wrong place at the wrong time, that’s all. Appears, bang…right on the bow of the guy’s boat.”

The harbor master noted that there are many boats in the area for recreational fishing due to the abundance of baitfish, adding that this is also what attracts whales to the area for feeding.

Harbor master crews had been monitoring the area since 5 a.m. for breaching the Marine Mammal Protection Act after a boat was struck by a whale on Friday. No such violation had been found at the time of the incident.

A paddleboarder has recorded video of a boat rocked by a whale off the coast of Massachusetts.

Environmental Police have been contacted and will investigate the incident, as well as whether the MMPA has been breached.
