The shell of the Orion Nebula leaks gas and dust from a newly discovered tear

The Orion Nebula, a famous star-forming region in the constellation Orion, appears to be leaking gas and dust from a tear in its gaseous shell discovered by NASA’s SOFIA flying telescope.

This expanding shell, known as the Orion‘s Veil, originated in the winds blowing from a massive group of stars in the nebula called the Trapezium Band. The winds stir up the dust and gas, creating a bubble around the nebula which extends towards Earthaccording A declaration (opens in a new tab) of the Universities Space Research Association (USRA).
