Today’s I 90 crash in McHenry County, Illinois: 7 dead, including 5 children, in a wrong-way crash near Anthony Rd. in Hampshire

Several people died after a violent back-traffic crash in the westbound lanes of I-90 near Hampshire early Sunday, Illinois State Police said.

HAMPSHIRE, Ill. (WLS) — Five children are among seven people killed in a fiery frontal crash on Interstate 90 near Hampshire early Sunday, according to Illinois State Police.

A vehicle was traveling the wrong way on I-90 westbound near Anthony Rd. when it hit another vehicle head-on around 2:11 a.m., state police said. Both vehicles were completely engulfed in flames.

Seven people were killed, including a woman and five children in the van and a second woman in the other car, state police said. Their identities have not yet been released.

One person was airlifted to Loyola University Medical Center with serious injuries, according to Hampshire Fire Protection District Chief Trevor Herrmann.

The accident temporarily closed both sides of the highway in McHenry County overnight. Westbound lanes were closed near mile marker 33 for several hours, reopening to traffic around 11:30 a.m.
