“We cannot be pro-insurgency and pro-American”

President Biden lambasted former President Trump’s inaction during the Jan. 6 insurgency on Monday, stressing in a speech that “you can’t be pro-insurgency and pro-cop.”

Why is this important: His comments come after the Jan. 6 select committee hearings revealed Trump’s repeated refusal to intervene as his supporters, many of whom were armed, stormed into the Capitol.

What he says : “On January 6, we relied on law enforcement to save our democracy,” Biden said in virtual remarks to the National Association of Black Law Enforcement Executives on Monday.

  • “You saw what happened. Capitol Police, DC Metropolitan Police, other law enforcement were attacked and assaulted before our eyes. Trampled, sprayed, trampled, brutalized. Lives were lost. been lost.”
  • “And for three hours, the defeated former President of the United States watched it all happen, as he sat in the comfort of the private dining room in the Oval Office,” he said.
  • “Donald Trump didn’t have the guts to act. Brave women and men across this country should never forget that. You can’t be pro-insurgency and pro-cop. You can’t be pro-insurgency and pro-democracy. You can’t be pro-insurgency and pro-American.”

The big picture: Several witnesses from Trump’s inner circle testified before the Jan. 6 committee that Trump did not call the Department of Defense, Department of Justice, Department of Homeland Security or any other agency to activate because the Capitol was under siege.

  • In his eventual video message asking the rioters to go home, he said: “We love you. You are very special.”
  • Excerpts from Trump’s Jan. 7 speech also showed he refused to say “the election is over” despite what was written in his prepared remarks.

To note: Several members of the Jan. 6 committee said Sunday they believed there was evidence that Trump had committed crimes in connection with the attack on the Capitol.
